Located fifteen miles northeast of Waxahachie in northeastern Ellis County, the city of Ferris is known locally as the "brick capital of the nation," as the city was home to 4 brick plants during the 50's and today, brick making dominates the local economy. There is a golf course located in the city called the "Old Brickyard Golf Course," paying respect to the industry that "paved" the economical road in Ferris. Home to roughly 2,200 people, the city offers commuter style living (with a large percentage of residents traveling to Dallas or surrounding areas daily for work), with all the big city conveniences just a short drive away. Students living in the Ferris area are served by the Ferris Independent School District.
